Summer in the city and sweltering hot is the sun
Fire hydrant water is gushing through the street
Laughing, splashing, jumping and having lots of fun
It's the city children's way of beating summer heat.
Fanning themselves with make shift paper fans
Mothers watching while sitting on the front stoop
As music blasts from somewhere up the stairs
Older kids gather across the street in a group.
While up above us the subway train rumbles to a stop
Workers coming home from their daily down town grind
Stopping at the candy store opened down the block
For a cooling drink leaving the working day behind.
Summer in the city and sweltering hot is the sun
As fire hydrant water gushes through the street
Laughing, splashing, jumping and having lots of fun
It's the city children's way of beating summer heat.

Hope you enjoyed my "Summer In The City" poem. Until the next time my friends, have a day of blessings.
We had rain here for awhile now and I am ready for some sunshine and nice weather. We do need rain....but every day!
ReplyDeleteMy husband was just saying,"Where's summer?" Western NY weather sure is funny---I bet it will be sweltering by mid July, wink. Beautiful poem, Toni. smiles
ReplyDeleteI remember loving summer when I was young. I lived in upstate NY but loved the lounging on the recliner lawn chair and all the activities of summer. Usually we went to Maine to visit family as well and I got to see the ocean. I dreaded summer when I was in Florida though! Loved the poem. Summer memories are the best! Have a blessed day.
ReplyDeleteI have never lived in a big city so my summer memories are quite different. I did enjoy your poem and reading about summers in the city!
ReplyDeleteYou summed it up perfectly. Exactly a NYC summer for sure.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if they still open the hydrants but I know they put in a lot of splash areas.
Its cool here today again.
