Saturday 9: Up on the Roof (1979)

Being it's Saturday I'm joining in on Sam's  *Saturday 9*  for today. Hope You join in too. It's a fun meme.

James Taylor

Saturday 9: Up on the Roof (1979)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it →
Here

1) JT sings that, when the world gets him down, he goes up on the roof to find peace. When you're "feeling tired and beat," what do you do to cheer yourself up?  I make myself a mug of coffee, read a mystery book or sit by my laptop and write poetry. And if it's baseball season like now, if there is a NY Yankee game on TV I'll drink my coffee and watch the game.

2) He sings that, at night, the stars put on a show for free. Are you economizing, or sticking to a budget?  Usually a little of both. 😊

3) In addition to recording this song for his album, Flag, James Taylor surprised the song's composer, and his good friend. Carole King by performing it the night she received her Kennedy Center Honor (see link above) Tell us about a good turn a friend has done for you recently.  My friend and sister (as she's both to me) surprised me with a new HP 17" Laptop in Rose Gold for this past Christmas and my birthday.

4) James Taylor and Carole King have been good friends for decades, but they have never been romantically involved. Do you have platonic friends of the opposite sex?  At my age all of the opposite sex are platonic friends and I'm very happy with that. 😄

5) James was born in the Boston hospital where his father worked as a resident physician. Are there any doctors or nurses in your family?  My late aunt was an RN and my youngest sister was an RN and is also an ordained minister and a professor.

6) When James was young, his family moved to Chapel Hill, NC. James has vivid memories of how beautiful the area was in all four seasons. What's your favorite time of year?  Out of the 4 seasons here in upstate NY, my favorite is Autumn.

7) In 1979, when this recording was popular, ESPN launched. Do you often watch that cable sports channel?  Every so often but mostly I watch the YES network live on HULU for the Yankee games and the Michael Kay talk show.

8) Also in 1979, the Voyager spacecraft sent photos back to earth that revealed Jupiter's rings. Without looking it up, can you name all the planets in our solar system?  Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and planet nine used to be Pluto but it's been claimed as not being a planet. (And I didn't look).

9) Random question: Our Saturday 9 Wizards give you a choice -- you can be 20 years old and gorgeous, 30 years old and brilliant, or 40 years old and rich. Which do you choose?  All of them or none of them. I'm happy in my own age group of being myself with what I have. 😉

Until the next time dear family and friends, be blessed

  3. Oh yes! I can get lost in a good baseball game too. Spring Training is on in a couple of hours, I will be watching that too.
Something about them dumping Pluto as a planet just makes me mad. It seems like I read they have found a new planet too. I used to really love to read about space, but I haven't in years.
That Autumn picture you posted is gorgeous! I love all of the seasons. Loved your answers! Have a great weekend!

  4. I love that photograph of autumn. My favorite too! They are calling Pluto a mini planet now.
I think it might be fun to see a ballgame in person at Yankee Stadium. My mom used to go with my brother in law. She was a diehard fan.

  5. You have quite a few family members in in the medical profession, a very fine life of service.
Fall is a beautiful season in the East. We get it in very late November and December.
Astronomy classes in College have embedded it in my brain. Otherwise, I'm "duh"
    Have a lovely week.

  6. I remember this song from way before 1979, with a different group...can't remember who. When I need to get away, I go for a walk with my camera, or go sit in the garden and watch the birds... Yes, I love autumn the most, even though here in Florida it isn't what you'd consider a true autumn, but it is cooler and lower humidity and I get re-energized with the cooler temps. Yes, I am on a tight budget, being retired and on a very fixed income...but God helps us get along fine if we are obedient to the plan... Have a blessed weekend my friend.

    1. The group was The Drifters who made it a hit in 1962. Way before James Taylor did. I loved their version of "Up On The Roof". My daughter Elena was born in 1962 and I used to sing that song all the time. :)
