Wednesday's Poetry Day ~ Sayings

Wrote this one last Friday while hearing a common saying on TV and it reminded me of many others. (POP Quiz: can you catch all the sayings in it?)

Sayings

Everything old is new again
As that very old saying goes
What goes around comes around
Is something everyone knows

You're never too old to learn
Has been said for many years
And with age comes wisdom
But many will say, who cares

Let's save for a rainy day
Is a saying I forever heard
And life is what we make it
Sayings very much preferred

Many hands make light work
As mothers will always say
Make hay while the sun shines
I'll leave the rest for another day

From mothers to daughters and sons
Sayings passed down for many years
Misquoted or not they usually apply
Some bring laughter, others bring tears.

How about Pumpkin Bread?

Around this time every year I've seen many different pumpkin bread recipes and not having much to post about I thought I'd post another one for you to see or copy to make for yourself and your family.

Pumpkin Bread
Ingredients

1-1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon salt
1-3/4 cups sugar
2 large eggs
2 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon extra-light olive oil
3/4 cup canned unsweetened pumpkin puree
3 tablespoons water

Directions

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Lightly oil a 9 x 5-inch loaf pan. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. In a large bowl, with an electric mixer, beat together the sugar, eggs, oil and pumpkin. Add the flour mixture to the pumpkin mixture alternating with the water, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix only until blended. Do not overmix. Spoon the batter into the loaf pan. Bake for 1 hour and 10 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the loaf sit in the pan for 15 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

NOTES:  Makes 1 loaf (about 12 slices).

Saturday 9: "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" Theme

Being it's Saturday I'm joining in on  *Saturday 9*  for today. Hope You join in too. It's a fun meme.

Saturday 9: "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" Theme
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it
Here

1) The Master of Suspense, Alfred Hitchcock, was born in England. Name another pop culture contribution England has made.  Plenty, The Beatles, David Bowie, The Kinks, and many more rock and pop groups.

2)This week's song is recognized as the theme to Hitchcock's long-running TV show, but "Funeral March for a Marionnette" is a classic piece written for piano in the late 1870s by Charles Gounod. Do you often listen to classical music?  Very often and times I prefer it. My favorites besides The Four Tenors are Andrea Bocelli, Il Divo, Il Volo, Mario Frangoulis and others.

3) Janet Leigh's shower scene in Hitchcock's Psycho is considered one of the scariest sequences ever filmed. What's the most frightening movie you've ever seen?  To me it was the original film "The Haunting with Julie Harris. It was the kind of movie that made you use your own mind and my mind really envisioned plenty. 😯

4) Hitchcock admitted that he "never trusted birds," and he took that fear and turned it into the movie, The Birds. Is there a member of the animal kingdom that just gives you "the creeps?"  No but I fear creepy crawly insects and snakes.

5) Halloween will soon be upon us. Will you carve a jack o'lantern this year?  No, I don't celebrate Halloween.

6)What candy will trick or treaters get at your house?.  None, my apartment complex is secured and living in the country trick or treaters don't get here.

7) When you went trick or treating, did you prefer fantasy costumes (like a storybook character) or scary ones (like a monster)?  See question 5

8) Which candy was your favorite? Which one were you disappointed to find in your trick or treat bag?  Again, see question 5. I never went trick or treating.

9) Random question -- Which do you find scarier -- cemeteries or haunted houses?  Neither as I don't believe in ghosts. 😵

Friday Foto Friends ~ Garden Magic

On my Pinterest page I usually save the magic of people and what they create with their hands. And here is what some create in pure beauty and magic. I thought I would show you four of the very many giant topiaries  in their/or for others, gardens. I have them on a specific board.  (Pssst POP QUIZ ~ Can you find the turtle in one of the photos?)

Wednesday's Poetry Day ~ Growing Older

When granted many years of life, growing old in age is natural, but growing old with grace is a choice. The clock never stops and never waits. The trick is growing up without growing old. It's life's plan after all and enjoyable if you accept it. So my friends here is another poem version of mine dealing with that fact.

Growing Older

Yes, older and wiser I've become
Well anyway older that's for sure
Daily things I've forgotten some
Each day I forget something more

Where did I put that set of keys?
They aren't where I saw them last
Oh Lord, someone help me please
This time is moving way too fast

Now I don't mind this aging thing
And I don't mind my wrinkled face
Or forgetfulness aging will bring
I only wish it would slow the pace

The saying goes what will be will be
And some memories are best to forget
Growing older is surely not up to me
So accept growing older with no regret.

Toni's Recipe Monday

Being many are thinking of Thanksgiving   (My family is anyway)  I thought I would do a recipe post for you. Prepare this easy, flavorful stuffing in a baking dish, or use it to stuff your bird or turkey. The apple and sausage give it an engaging flavor.

Apple & Sausage Cornbread Stuffing
Ingredients

2 (8.5 ounce) packages dry corn muffin mix
1 pound pork sausage links, thinly sliced
1 Granny Smith apple - peeled, cored and chopped
1/2 pound fresh mushrooms, sliced
1 cup chopped celery
1 cup chopped onion
2 cloves garlic, chopped
8 slices white bread, cut into cubes
salt and pepper to taste

Directions

Prepare corn muffin mix according to package directions. Cool and crumble. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Place sausage in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium high heat until evenly brown. Drain and set aside. In a large skillet over medium heat, slowly cook and stir the mushrooms, celery, onion and garlic until soft. In a large bowl, mix the crumbled prepared corn muffin mix, sausage, mushroom mixture, apple, bread, salt and pepper. Transfer the mixture to a medium baking dish. Bake in the preheated oven 45 minutes, or until lightly browned. Makes 8-10 servings.

Saturday 9: Sweet City Woman (1971)

Being it's Saturday I'm joining in on  *Saturday 9*  for today. Hope You join in too. It's a fun meme.

The Stampeders
Saturday 9: Love Is All Around (1970)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it HERE.

1) The lyrics tell us the singer is on his way to catch a train and he really wants to be on time. When is the last time you were late for something?  I'm never late for anything I'm usually early. I hate making others wait.

2) He sings he's on his way to meet a woman known for her macaroons. What's your favorite cookie?  Lemon Iced or Anise Biscotti.

3) His girlfriend's face is so pretty she lights up the city night. How many lights are in the room you're in? How many are switched on?  3 lights in my main room and usually only one is on.

4) This is the rare top 40 tune that prominently features a banjo. Sam has always been crazy about the sound of a banjo. What sound makes you smile? (It doesn't have to be a musical instrument. Think bacon sizzling, church bells, etc.)  The sound of a far away train whistle.

5) 47 years after their record was a hit, The Stampeders still tour every summer, playing festivals across the US and their native Canada. Do you enjoy live music under the stars? Or would you prefer to be seated in a theater?  When I was younger it was both. Now I enjoy concerts on my TV.

6) In 1971, when this song was popular on the radio, detective shows were popular on TV. Mannix, Ironside and Cannon were all in the Top 20. Who is your favorite TV detective?  Anyone that knows me can answer this one. It's Hercule Poirot.

7) Also in 1971, the Post Office Department was disbanded as a Cabinet department and became The United States Postal Service. When did you last go to the post office? Were you mailing something? Buying stamps? Picking up a package? Renewing your passport?  It's been so long that I don't remember.

8) Race car legend Jeff Gordon was born in 1971. Do you watch NASCAR?  No, I'm a baseball fan. Basically the only sport I watch now and only the NY Yankees.

9) Random question -- Do you have a vaccination scar? If so, where is it?  ~ On my upper left arm.

Wednesday's Poetry Day ~ My Addiction

I wrote this one down while I was taking care of "my addiction" last October and thought it was definitely good for a repeat. 😍 Here you go... Love this stuff.

Don't Hold Back
(My Coffee Addiction)

Hook me up
Don't hold back
It's what I need
To keep me on track

Pour it now
I like it plain
hold off the cow
Stops me going insane

Feels so good
Just what I need
Please no sugar
Just liquid java seed

So hook me up
Just plain and black
Here in my mug
Don't hold that java back...

Sunday Stealing ~ The Phone and Pancakes

Linking in with Sunday Stealing for today as I haven't done this one in awhile and I like this week's meme. This one is titled,
"The Phone and Pancakes".

Phone...

1. Your phone rings. Who is the most likely caller?  My daughter mostly.
2. How long do you chat on the phone each day?  Not long as I'm not a phone person.
3. Who do you speak to the most?  My daughter, my sisters and my grandson
4. Do you often not answer if a certain person comes up on your caller id?  On my cellphone yes to anyone not on my callers list.
5. Do you phone friends at work?  None of my friends still work, when they did I never called them at work.
6. Do you make personal calls at work?  I'm retired quite a few years. 😊
7. Who do you always say “I love you” at the end of the call?  Every family member. We never hang up without saying I love you.
8. Do you use a landline or cell more often?  Cell for texts and long distance and my unlisted personal landline just for family members.
9. Who in the blogosphere that you haven’t chatted with but would like to?  In today's world I chat with my blogging friends on Facebook. 😊

Pancakes...

1. Scratch or mix? Buttermilk or plain?  Never a mix. I make my own pancakes using milk.
2. Pure and simple, or with additions cooked in?  Depends on how I feel mostly plain with flavors or certain fruits and raisins.
3. For breakfast or for dinner?  I've been known to make them for breakfast, lunch and dinner depending on my mood.
4. Preferred syrup or other topping? How about the best side dish?  Honey or Maple Syrup and if I have it I'll cook bacon with a batch.
5. Favorite pancake restaurant?  George and Son a diner I usually go to with my sister Phyllis every once in awhile.

Bonus:  Any tasty recipes out there, for pancakes or other special breakfast dishes? Bring 'em on!  Found this easy recipe online.

Wednesday's Poetry Day ~ Traveling On

Here is a brand new poem written yesterday while sitting and watching TV that brought on this latest silly brainstorm. (P.S. That's not me in the photo) 😉

Traveling On

I'm traveling on to places unseen
Away from places I've already been

It's time to see some sights anew
For lately I have seen so very few

Where to go I really know not where
I'll travel the road without a care

Cities or countries matter not
I am hoping to get to see a lot

Take a chance and come with me
You'll never regret what you see

No need to pack your suitcase to go
A couch, remote and the Travel show

Just sit and relax and watch with me
There's so many places we'll get to see.

My Day So Far #3

I'm joining in on Melanie's meme. A weekly Monday meme. I'm a day late I know.. Just picked a few questions from the meme as most answers are almost the same each week.
The date today: October 9th, 2018

What are you wearing? A T-Shirt top, jeans and mary jane slip ons.

What chore around the house have you been putting off? Washing windows and getting ready for the cooler weather

A scripture verse you'd like to share.

How about a creative project you are working on? One in progress or one still in your head. Nothing special just some Autumn and Winter graphics for my blog.

A funny graphic, photo or quote?

Any parting thoughts?

Dreary And Rainy Days

It's been cloudy and dreary here all week raining on and off. It's been so quiet around here that I spend the days not accomplishing much of anything. So here is my poem for today that reflects the weather. At least I'll get to enjoy the company of my sisters this afternoon for our card game.

Falling Rain

Darkened daylight and steady rain
Strangely soothing on window pane

Birds in background chirping too
Softly I hum following their cue

Even the clouds moving in time
Make for a day drearily sublime

Cool and yet still warming my soul
Weather right now is in control

Eyes closed relaxing no strain
Enjoying the sound of falling rain.

Wednesday's Poetry Day ~ Poetry In Motion

Here's how I "see" poetry I write while I'm creating one. It's just a simple little poem that took me exactly 5 minutes to come up with it. Hope you find it enjoyable. 😊

Poetry In Motion

Poetry in motion
Letters dancing round
Rhymes in rhythm
Never touching ground

Words go together
Swaying in my mind
Forming sentences
With words that bind

Instantly creating
A story in rhyme
Poetry in motion
Just one of a kind

My paper with pen
Hand ready to write
Hoping the words
Bring many delight
